William Joscelyn Arkell, (born June 9, 1904, Highworth, Wiltshire, Eng.—died April 18, 1958, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire), paleontologist, an authority on Jurassic fossils (those dating from 200 million to 146 million years ago). Arkell taught at Trinity College, Cambridge University. His work includes the classification of Jurassic ammonites and an interpretation of the environments of that period. He wrote Jurassic Geology of the World (1956), which stimulated further development of a stratigraphical classification applicable to all geological systems and periods.
